Become a Life Coach
By Leigh Hunt • Category: Internet Based Business IdeasDo you love helping people? Would you like a work from home career that makes you feel fulfilled? Would you like to have complete flexibility over your own working hours? Yes? Well, then perhaps you should become a Life Coach. Read on to find out more …
As a life coach you’ll give support and encouragement to your clients, helping them find their own solutions to change one or more aspects of their lives for the better. For example, your client may want to improve their work/life balance, health, relationships, career or self-esteem. Through use of listening and questioning you’ll help your clients move forward and make real changes in their lives. You’ll help them set goals and achieve their aims.
As a life coach you’ll need to remain supportive and never judge your client, thus enabling you to build rapport and achieve results. Life coaching is not about telling your clients what they should do; it’s about helping them find their own answers, to take control of their own lives. In essence, you’ll make them feel empowered. The satisfaction you’ll feel when you see your clients making breakthroughs will be thrilling. You’ll also need to be able to instil confidence in your clients and act as a source of encouragement. During your life coaching course you’ll discover ways to improve your listening and questioning skills (something we could all benefit from!).
When you set up your life coaching practice you may want to find a niche in a particular area of life coaching such as business coaching, spiritual coaching, coaching for women, coaching for teenagers, sports coaching, etc. This will enable you to really target your clients effectively and also focus on an area you feel passionately about.
As a life coach you’ll have the freedom to set your own hours and work from home. Most coaching tends to occur over the phone, although you may like to offer face-to-face coaching too. If you do coach from home set aside a comfortable area where you’ll receive no interruptions during sessions. You’ll need to make sure you have appropriate liability insurance for visitors, which is easy to arrange.
Start-up costs are relatively low, especially if the majority of your coaching takes place over the telephone. You’ll need a telephone and answering machine for business use, and possibly a mobile if you want clients to be able to contact you when you’re out and about. In this day and age, you’ll also need to set up a website, which needn’t be expensive. As part of our business support service we’ll guide you in the right direction. We advise you to get indemnity insurance, which currently costs just over £200 per year. We also recommend joining an organisation such as the Association for Coaching, but again we can tell you more about this when you’re ready to set up your practice.
